An Illan Meslier Marseille move is being talked about in France less than two months after the former Leeds United goalkeeper left Elland Road and signed for Arsenal — and if it happens, it would be one of the stranger footnotes of a summer that has already reshaped the Whites’ goalkeeping department beyond recognition.
Meslier’s seven-year spell in West Yorkshire ended quietly in June when his contract expired. There was no fee, no farewell tour, and barely any football: as the Yorkshire Evening Post reports, the one-time No.1 had slipped to third choice and did not play a single competitive game last season, turning out only a handful of times for the Under-21s.

At the start of July his next step was confirmed, and it was not the one most people had pencilled in. Rather than heading home to France, Meslier joined Arsenal on a free transfer, signing a two-year contract with the option of a further 12 months at the Emirates.
Now, with the window down to its final days, he has surfaced as a target elsewhere. Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna, posting on X, describes the 26-year-old as one of Marseille’s "active leads" as the French club hunt a new goalkeeper before the deadline. Nothing is agreed, and this remains a report rather than a deal — but it is a report with obvious logic behind it. Marseille need a keeper. Meslier is 26, French, and has just moved to a club where he is unlikely to be first pick.
Many had expected him to return to Ligue 1 the moment his Leeds contract ran out. Doing it via a summer detour through north London would be a sensational twist on that theory.
The Leeds connection runs deeper than nostalgia
There is a reason this one matters at Elland Road beyond fondness for a lad who played more than 200 games for the club. Before Meslier’s name came up, Marseille had reportedly expressed an interest in Lucas Perri — and Perri’s situation has moved fast this week.
The Brazilian sits behind club-record signing James Trafford in Daniel Farke’s pecking order, and by Thursday a move to Torino had been reported as close to completion, with Michael Zetterer of Eintracht Frankfurt lined up as the replacement deputy. If Marseille have pivoted from Perri to Meslier, that is a small piece of evidence that Leeds’ own goalkeeping reshuffle is progressing as intended.
Look at the department Farke started the summer with and the one he has now. Trafford arrived from Manchester City as the new No.1. Illan Meslier, Karl Darlow and Isaac Schmidt all left. Perri is on his way to Serie A. A goalkeeping room that had become a queue of people waiting for something to change has been emptied and rebuilt in a matter of weeks.
Vindication, not a snub
It would be easy to frame all this as Leeds getting rid of a player who is now wanted by two of Europe’s bigger clubs. That reading does not really survive contact with last season, when Meslier played no competitive minutes at all and the club drew its own conclusions about where he stood.
What it does show is that the market still rates a goalkeeper who spent seven years absorbing everything a Leeds promotion push and a Premier League survival fight can throw at a young player. Elland Road saw the best of him, and it saw the difficult months too. Both are true.
Deadline day is coming for Leeds too
The Whites have until 11pm on Tuesday 1 September to finish their business, and Farke has been open about wanting more before the window shuts. Leeds go into it in as good a mood as any side in the division, having won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend and returned to the City Ground three days later to win 2-0 in the EFL Cup, with Daniel James and James Justin on the scoresheet.
Brentford visit Elland Road on Sunday. Meslier will be watching from somewhere else — and, on this evidence, he may not yet know where.
