Leeds United got their season off to a ideal start with a hard-fought opening weekend victory, but one specific moment left pundit Chris Hughton pointing fingers.

Instead, fellow debutant Harry Wilson unintentionally denied his teammate a golden opening goal, drawing direct criticism from Hughton at the interval.
A Frustrating Offside Decision
High expectations surrounded Wilson’s arrival at LS11, and the Welsh international thought he had delivered in the 26th minute when he poked the ball into the back of the net. However, the assistant referee raised his flag, correctly chalking the goal off for offside.
Replays showed Wilson straying beyond the last defender, but the true damage lay directly behind him in the penalty box. Calvert-Lewin had timed his movement to perfection, preparing to tap home an unmissable chance before Wilson intervened from an illegal position.

Speaking at half-time on Premier Sports’ live coverage, former Premier League manager Chris Hughton highlighted Wilson’s lack of positional awareness and expressed sympathy for Calvert-Lewin.
“If I am Calvert-Lewin here, if you look at his movement, he would be incredibly frustrated,” Hughton stated. “He is about to tap it in. But if you look at Wilson’s movement, where he is poor here is that he is almost always in an offside position. If he is coming onto it, that is a little bit different. He has got to check his run.”
Hughton’s analysis highlighted an awkward debut for Wilson, who struggled to make a positive impact before Farke eventually substituted him.

While Wilson produced a disappointing individual performance, Daniel Farke will care far more about the final scoreline.
Stach’s brilliant set-piece heroics ensured Leeds took max points on day one, giving the Yorkshire club the perfect platform to build upon. Farke knows Wilson possesses genuine quality, and the German manager will expect a swift improvement from his new winger in the coming weeks.
